Matt Shane was born in 1981 in Vancouver, Canada. He makes paintings, drawings, and collaborative installations that are anchored in the realm of landscape. His pictorial worlds follow a Romantic lineage, but arrive at a mercurial ground, at the border of perception and fantasy.
On obtaining his BFA from the University of Victoria in 2004, Shane was named National Winner of the Bank of Montreal’s 1st Art Competition and received a grant to exhibit the first of many collaborative projects with artist Jim Holyoak. Since then, he has organized several public drawing installations and exhibited widely in North America, Europe and Dubai. His most recent collaborative wall drawing is on display semi-permanently at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Matt Shane received an MFA from Concordia University in 2013. He lives and works often at artist residencies, sometimes in Montreal and mostly on Pender Island, BC.
